SUMMARY:1943: The unification of the French Resistance movements under Jean Moulin
DESCRIPTION:Lecture (German) by Guilhem Zumbaum-tomasi\nMontpellier House, Kettengasse 19, 69117 Heidelberg, free admission\nOn June 22, 1940, France signs the armistice in Compiègne. Until the liberation of France in 1944, various movements and groups, some of them unorganized, emerged to oppose the German occupation. Jean Moulin of Béziers, a confidant of Charles de Gaulle, brought all the groups together on May 27, 1943, to form a Resistance Council, the Conseil National de Résistance. Shortly after the council is constituted, its president Moulin is arrested and tortured by the Gestapo. He dies during transport to Germany. The lecture recalls the creation of the Conseil National de la Résistance 80 years ago and shows its relevance for today.\nHistorian Guilhem Zumbaum-Tomasi has been working on the subject of historiography on the Résistance in Germany and France since completing his studies in Montpellier.\n
