Driving, smoking weed, hanging out: Made after the Franco dictatorship, the film accurately described the attitude to life of many young people during Spain’s “transición” to democracy – with high unemployment, inflation and drug use. With a cast of non-professional actors who basically re-enacted their lives, it was closely based on reality. A group of friends from a suburban neighborhood start stealing cars, initially for fun, then out of a need to feel alive. One of the highlights of the so-called cine quinqui (Spanish exploitation film genre) in its fast-paced production. A cult film of extraordinary lyricism, which was awarded the Golden Bear at the 1981 Berlinale.
