The tragic comedy A SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD tells the (unhappy) love story of warm-hearted Nino and cynical Yasmina. Born on the same day in 1982 in the same hospital, they meet for the first time at school and soon realize that there is a deep connection between them for which neither of them can find a proper explanation. Over the course of three decades, the couple are constantly put to the test, confronted with internal and external conflicts time and again – but above all with the all-important question: to leave or to stay? A story of hope, passion and heartbreak that offers a glimpse into the eventful history of Lebanon.
Cyril Aris (*1987) is a Lebanese director and screenwriter. Born in Beirut, he attracted the attention of international critics with the documentaries THE SWING (2018) and DANCING ON THE EDGE OF A VOLCANO (2023). His feature film debut A SAD AND BEAUTIFUL WORLD premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2025 and was immediately awarded the Audience Award.
