In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Algerian War continues. Many destitute young Algerians joined the French army as auxiliary troops, the so-called “harkis”. Among them are Salah and Kaddour, who are under the command of Lieutenant Pascal. As the war draws to a close and Algeria’s imminent independence looms, the fate of the Harkis hangs in the balance. Lieutenant Pascal tries to evacuate all the men in his unit to France, but his superiors have other plans.

Philippe Faucon (*1958) is a director born in Morocco. Les Harkis celebrated its premiere in Cannes in 2022 in the “Directors’ Fortnight” section. He first came to Cannes directly with his debut feature L’Amour in 1990 and is now represented at the Mediterranean Film Festival for the sixth time.
