In 1974, the sisters Alberta and Gabriella are faced with a major task: within a very short space of time, they and the employees of their Roman dressmaker’s shop have to sew the costumes for a major film project set in the 18th century. The project turns into a stage – showing on the one hand how well-rehearsed the community of seamstresses is, and on the other hand revealing how each of them has to struggle with their own worries and hardships. With great care and expertise, Özpetek stages not only – as they say – his favorite actresses, but also the tailoring trade itself, with a close eye for materiality, machines and what clothing can do to people.

Ferzan Özpetek (*1959) is a Turkish-Italian film and opera director and screenwriter. He moved to Rome at the age of 19, where he studied directing and costume design, among other things. He celebrated his first international success in 1997 with his debut HAMAM – THE TURKISH BATH. Today, he is considered one of the most successful representatives of the ‘new Italian cinema’ and dedicates his films above all to the many facets of great relationships.
