Film FIUME O MORTE! by Igor Bezinović

As part of the 40th Mediterranean Film Day 23.1. – 8.2.2025

Croatia, Italy, Slovenia 2025/ Director: Igor Bezinović/ Documentary/ 112 min. OmeU

In 1919, the Italian poet and dandy Gabriele D’Annunzio occupied the city of Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia) with irregulars as a reaction to the Paris peace negotiations and proclaimed the Italian regency
on the Quarnero. The event is regarded as a forerunner of fascist staging politics: new uniforms and new ceremonies such as balcony speeches were tested here for the first time and developed as if in a laboratory for political theater. Around 100 years later, Igor Bezinović from Rijeka reconstructs the events together with the locals using D’Annunzio’s propaganda images. The result is a hilarious recreation that particularly benefits from the humorous contrast between the historical material and the authentic Rijekans of today. The film was awarded the main prize and the FIPRESCI prize at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Igor Bezinović (*1983) from Rijeka, Croatia, studied sociology and film in Zagreb and has been making hybrid films for many years, which are located between documentary, reenactment and fiction. He received international attention with A BRIEF EXCURSION (2017).
