IN THE SHADOW OF THE ORANGE TREE uses the fate of a family over three generations to show the fault lines and developments in Palestinian history. When Noor is seriously injured during a demonstration in 1988, his mother Hanan looks back on the experiences of her parents and grandparents: Sharif’s steadfastness in Jaffa in 1948, expulsion, imprisonment in camps and the arduous attempt to put down new roots in the West Bank. Cherien Dabis shows how historical events shape the family’s life and are perpetuated in their decisions, relationships and memories. A film about roots and the traces of the past in the present.

Cherien Dabis is a Palestinian-American director, screenwriter and producer. Growing up in Ohio, she spent many summers with part of her family in Jordan, which shaped her perspective on migration and cultural identity and is reflected in her films. After studying at Columbia University, she made her first short films before gaining international attention with AMREEKA in 2009. She has also worked on series such as OZARK and ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING.
