In the alleyways of l’Estaque, a district of Marseille, the social drama La pie voleuse follows its main character Maria, who fights unwaveringly for her dream: her talented grandson
will one day enjoy great success as a pianist. In order to pay for the piano and lessons, she works as a domestic help for elderly people and pretends to her family that she is also trying to find other part-time jobs. In reality, she has found another, disastrous solution to get the money, in which the people she looks after with so much dedication are not uninvolved.
Robert Guédiguian, born in Marseille in 1953, is a French film director and producer of German-Armenian descent. He celebrated his first successes with films such as Marius and Jeannette – A Love in Marseille and The City Eats Its Children, for which he was awarded the Golden Spike at the Semana Internacional de Cine de Valladolid in 2000. He is regularly represented at the Mediterranean Film Festival with his socially critical films, most recently in 2025 with Et la fête continue!
