In their documentary WO/MEN, Nrecaj and Templin portray six Burrneshas in a gentle, authentic and impressive way. In Albania and neighboring Balkan countries, Burrneshas take on the role of men in their families, whether to fill the place of the deceased father or to provide for the family as a son. Often the decision is made for young girls, rarely do they themselves decide to lead their lives as “sworn virgins”. The motives that motivate each of them tell their own stories.
Kristine Nrecaj is a German director, screenwriter and producer with Kosovan-Albanian roots. In her first documentary KOSOWO (2003), she dealt with the post-war reality of Kosovo
. Today, her work explores themes such as gender issues, cultural heritage, femininity and healing. Director and screenwriter Birthe Templin (*1975) grew up in northern Germany and Argentina. She studied in London and Warsaw before founding the production company ipanemafilm. Today she produces films for cinema, television, museums and educational platforms.
