HERVÉ HANNIN WINEGROWING IN THE LANGUEDOC: STAGES OF A SPECIAL HISTORY, NEW CHALLENGES
Lecture (French) with translation
Montpellier-Haus, Kettengasse 19, 69117 Heidelberg, admission free, followed by wine tasting
Some people may still be familiar with the phylloxera plague that destroyed a large part of France’s vineyards in the mid-19th century – but what is less well known is that botanists in Montpellier, including Jules-Émile Planchon, found the means to combat it.
How the wine-growing sector, which is particularly important for the south of France, has developed, what successes and crises it has experienced in recent decades and is currently going through, what consequences climate change and social expectations could have on wine-growing, are some of the many questions that will be discussed by Hervé Hannin on this evening. Hervé Hannin, an agricultural engineer and economist, holds the Chair of Viticulture and Winemaking at the Institut d’Agronomie Montpellier.
He specializes in the impact of climate change, phasing out the use of pesticides and international markets in the wine sector.
He is also an expert at the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) and a member of numerous scientific and professional committees for viticulture and winemaking.
