Grisettes de Montpellier
Grisettes of Montpellier are spherical sweets made from two typical products of Languedoc : honey from Narbonne – very famous in the 13th century – and licorice, which has been a specialty of Montpellier since the 18th century.
As early as 1150, a pharmacist from Montpellier invented la grisette based on honey and licorice for its medicinal properties. La grisette was also used as a means of exchange, in trade with pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The name grisette probably originated in the 14th century. Unfortunately, the grisette recipe was forgotten at the beginning of the 20th century.
When Mr. Raymond Müller was clearing out an attic in 1964, he found a recipe for grisettes from 1837. He therefore founded his confectionery store to reincarnate la Grisette de Montpellier. Since 2017, the production has been managed by Lionel Lopez, Jean-Claude Lacaze, Nérios Group (les eaux Mont Roucous) and André Sembelie, former Chairman of Perrier and former Head of Human Resources at Nestlé.
Ingredients: Sugar, glucose syrup, licorice. Flavors : honey, anethole. Coloring : E151, E104, E129.
Available in 3 sizes: 60 gr., 150 gr. and 220 gr.
